Introduction to Tutoring (Ed Pol 150)
Learning Support is pleased to offer this one credit course open to all tutors who are employed by a UW-Madison learning center. Introduction to Tutoring will be offered every fall and spring semester.
Spring 2025 Course Sections:
- Wednesdays, 5:30-6:45 pm
- Tuesdays, 2:30-3:45 pm
This course will introduce tutoring techniques that focus on:
- How students learn and how to ask questions
- Research-based learning strategies
- Promoting active learning and productive struggle
- Building on student thinking
- Giving feedback
- Cognitive apprenticeship (coaching, scaffolding, modeling)
Upon completion of the course, tutors will be able to:
- Pose meaningful questions to tutees to promote understanding
- Understand and explain learning strategies
- Describe and apply basic learning theories in tutoring sessions
